enemies attack while loading

I was reloading a save in the Parker farm level after taking a break from the game and while the loading screen was up I could hear the sounds of a (respawned) enemy attacking. When the load screen finished, I was almost dead-- the enemy had been attacking me while loading. I quit and tried again and the same thing happened.
